Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons, is the newest stadium in the National Football League. Two years after debuting, the Atlanta Falcons are already making changes to the stadium and have chosen to replace the turf ahead of the 2019 NFL season. However, turf replacement is a chore that is expected to be completed every few seasons due to the wear and tear by both the Atlanta Falcons and MLS’ Atlanta United FC. The constant repainting of the turf for different events also produces wear and tear.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium recently hosted Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. The venue also hosted the 2018 college football national championship between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs. The upcoming turf replacement will be overseen by the company FieldTurf is expected to cost $700,000 to complete. The turf will be an updated version of the stadium’s current turf system and will only take one week to completely install. FieldTurf also handled the installation of the current turf system before Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017.

Other changes Atlanta Falcons fans can expect at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2019 include the following.

  • Self-serve coolers on the upper level of the stadium.
  • Five new automated turnstiles.
  • New video equipment.
  • A new cooling tower water-treatment system.
  • Various restorations and updates to the stadium’s current infrastructure.

The ongoing improvements to Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be funded by the citywide hotel-motel tax. The Atlanta Falcons organization will finance all improvements to Mercedes-Benz Stadium that the hotel-motel tax will not cover.
