A couple of friends and I were students at CSU back in the day and one random weekend decided to make the trip to Denver to check out some baseball. The Rockies were playing the Pittsburgh Pirates that night which is far from the sexiest game of all time but it was still a blast!

We sat in section 142, row 19. 142 was part of the midfield boxes, the infield boxes are the seats behind each dugout and home plate. Row 19 was almost exactly in the middle which in my mind was the perfect vantage point. You sit too close and your view of the outfield is limited; just my opinion.
I think the highlight of our tour of Coors Field was visiting 'The Tavern' next door where they have a rooftop bar that overlooks the field. They always have a ton of drink specials and every Rockies fan seemed to be at the Tavern before the game.

I found Rockies fans to be very casual and welcoming. You shouldn't feel uncomfortable about wearing your Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants jersey into Coors Field. The Sandlot Brewery area is also a good spot to visit.

To give you an idea what the view of the field is like from section 142, here is a Youtube video shot from there during a Rockies/Anaheim Angels game at Coors Field.
