The Minnesota Wild have been selected to host the 2021 NHL Winter Classic. The game will be held at Target Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins. The visiting team has not yet been named. The 2021 NHL Winter Classic will not be the first outdoor hockey game for the Minnesota Wild. The Wild hosted the Chicago Blackhawks at TCF Bank Stadium during the 2016 NHL Stadium Series; a game the Wild won by a score of 6-1. 2021 will mark the 13th NHL Winter Classic since the event was founded back in 2008. The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at New Era Field during the inaugural NHL Winter Classic.

National Hockey League officials were impressed with Target Field’s recent renovations and upgrades following a visit to the facility in 2019. The NHL also noticed how well the Twin Cities managed both the NCAA Men’s Final Four as well as the 2018 Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots.

The Minnesota Twins have played their home games at Target Field since 2010. The venue has a capacity of just under 40,000 seats. Other Major League Baseball stadiums that have hosted the NHL Winter Classic include Citi Field, Busch Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Nationals Park, and Citizens Bank Park. There is perhaps no better destination for an outdoor hockey game than in the state of Minnesota. Detroit, Michigan may be Hockeytown, USA., but Minnesota is America’s “Hockey State”.
