The Texas Rangers will debut at Globe Life Field on Monday, March 23, 2020 for a Spring Training exhibition game vs. the St. Louis Cardinals. The 2020 Major League Baseball schedule has yet to be released so the new stadium’s official opening game will come a week or two later. The Texas Rangers are expected to open the 2020 Major League Baseball season on the road to give the organization an opportunity to correct any of the new stadium’s shortcomings following the exhibition game. The exhibition game could be considered as a soft opening.
The rest of the league will open play on March 26, 2020; the earliest scheduled Opening Day in Major League Baseball history. Construction crews have been working at Globe Life Field since October 2017. The stadium will be located adjacent to Globe Life Park, the team’s current home stadium. Globe Life Field will feature a retractable roof and will have a seating capacity of just over 40,000.
Globe Life Field will be Major League Baseball’s newest ballpark since the Atlanta Braves debuted at SunTrust Park in 2017. The opening of Globe Life Field will be complimented with Texas Live! an adjacent mixed-use development with hotel, retail and dining options. Texas Live! opened during the fall of 2018; a Loews hotel will open on the stadium site later this year. Many speculate that the Texas Rangers were not in dire need of a new baseball stadium. However, the team is scrambling to keep up with the rest of the league in terms of the amenities they can offer their fans during games. Surprisingly, the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays have yet to devise a plan for the construction of their new home baseball stadiums.
