View of the Netting at Yankee Stadium, Home of the New York Yankees

Two weeks after a 105 MPH foul ball struck a young girl at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees have announced they will be adding more netting around the infield. The netting currently extends from the beginning of both dugouts and behind home plate. In 2018, the netting will extend to the end of the dugouts.

The Yankees will also be adding additional netting to their spring training ballpark in Tampa, Florida. Other Major League Baseball teams have also announced plans to add additional netting to their home stadiums as well. These teams include the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners. Major League Baseball and Commissioner Rob Manfred recommended that all teams expand the netting at their home stadiums back in 2015. Many Major League Baseball fans spoke out against more netting afraid that it could detract from their view of the field. Rafael Espinal, a politician from New York City's 37th district, had been pressuring the New York Yankees to add more netting to Yankee Stadium since May. Espinal also pressured the New York Mets to add more netting to Citi Field.
