Veterans Stadium was the long time home of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and Major League Baseball's Philadelphia Phillies. The stadium was located on the current site of all three of Philadelphia's stadiums and arenas; the South Philadelphia Sports Complex off of Broad Street. With 65,000 seats, Veterans Stadium was built in the typical cookie-cutter design of the era. Both the Eagles and the Phillies called "The Vet" home from 1971 to 2003. The final Eagles home game at Veterans Stadium was played on January 19th, 2003 when the Eagles hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The final Phillies home game was played on September 28th, 2003 when the Phillies hosted the Atlanta Braves.
The venue would often host the annual Army-Navy football game which is now held at Lincoln Financial Field, current home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Veterans Stadium was imploded on March 21st, 2004. The famed 700 level (top level) of Veterans Stadium was a legendary area of debauchery at Eagles and Phillies home games. Fans of visiting teams were often ridiculed and would have beer thrown on them. Drunkenness, public urination, fights and cursing were very common on the 700 level. It's been confirmed that there is indeed a jail for Eagles fans at Lincoln Financial Field. Rumor is, the "stadium jail" began at Veterans Stadium. However, if you were a fan of either franchise, you loved the 700 level and the passion the fans showed up there.
Our staff wanted to give Philadelphia sports fans the opportunity to take a walk down memory lane and relive some old memories from Veterans Stadium. Enjoy!
