Came to a Royals/Yankees game and sat in 435, row JJ, seat 21. I'm a Yankees fan in disguise throughout the entire season except for those 3 days each season when the Yankees are in town. There were more Yankees fans than there were Royals fans and that's usually the story. Royals fans are still very nice to visiting fans with the occasional head butting with the Cardinals fans during Inter League play.
This section probably isn't the best for kids. Too far from the field so the kids will feel out of the loop. And if they know there is a playground with batting cages and mini golf in the stadium, they will likely want to sit near that. (Center Field).
Row JJ isn't too high up though and is in close proximity to the exit tunnel. You won't be able to see the field from the concourse at all, everything is enclosed.

If you're planning on making a trip to Kauffman and consider yourself a big baseball fan, there are two baseball museums for you to see on your visit. 1) The Negro League Museum on 18th and Vine Streets is wonderful with lots of history. It's $10 to visit. 2) The Royals Hall of Fame inside Gate A is also great. No the Royals don't have as much history as the nearby St. Louis Cardinals but if you're a fan of the Royals, you need to see their Hall of Fame. You'll also probably enjoy the statues of Dick Howser, George Brett and Frank White on the grounds as well. If you want to take an actual tour of Kauffman Stadium, tours are $15 for adults.

To give you an idea what the view of the field is like from section 435, here is a Youtube video shot from there during a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium.
