To give you an idea what the view of the field is like from section 343, here is a Youtube video shot from there during a Lions/Chicago Bears game at Ford Field.

I took my brother to his first Detroit Lions game two seasons ago for a preseason game vs. the Cleveland Browns. Well, it was preseason and it was the Browns vs. the Lions so as you could imagine, the place wasn't even 3/4 full and the fans weren't all that over bearing or excited about the game.
These seats aren't for everyone, they're upper level end zone and were far from the action so it was hard to get a feel for the game or make out the players. But if you just want a cheap ticket to grant entrance into the place, then 343 is a good section to go with. The leg space was above average and the stadium is very easy to navigate - we had no trouble finding our seats.

I can't really afford tickets to regular season home games and only paid $25 for two seats in row 9 of this section. We didn't attempt to move down during the game although we could have. This is a beautiful venue, if you get a chance to visit Detroit you won't want to pass it up because you only have a few days per year to see it. The nearby Greektown is also a neat little area to visit while you're in town. It's within walking distance of the stadium and yes, the surrounding area is very safe.
