Detroit Lions Adding New Turf At Ford Field

The Detroit Lions will be replacing the artificial field turf at Ford Field for the 2019 NFL season. Crews will begin installing the turf on Wednesday, May 1; a project that will take roughly four weeks to complete. That process will include vacuuming the old turf’s infill, cutting and removing the old turf, laying down the new turf, and installing the new turf’s infill. Football fans will be unable to notice a difference in the design and appearance of the new turf system.

FieldTurf, the team’s current turf provider, will oversee the installation of the new turf which is called “FieldTurf Classic HD”. FieldTurf Classic HD is an upgraded version of Ford Field’s previous turf system which has been in place since Ford Field debuted back in 2002. Classic HD is made of a slit-film yarn that has more durability and comfort than previous FieldTurf products. FieldTurf also uses UV stabilizers and high-end polymer in its turf systems. Most new turf systems cost between $600,000 to $1 Million to install and are a cheaper alternative to natural grass. An estimate of the amount of money required to complete the new turf’s installation was not disclosed to the public.

The new turf is expected to endure another 10 to 12 seasons at Ford Field. Parts of the old turf could be sold to fans as keepsakes in the future although that decision will be explored at a later date. FieldTurf, which is headquartered in Montreal, has provided the turf at Ford Field since the stadium’s debut in 2002. FieldTurf has also worked with other NFL teams and their turf systems including the New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and New York Giants.
