Construction On New Raiders Stadium In Las Vegas Could Be Delayed

Both Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, California have NFL stadiums that are due to open at the beginning of the 2020 NFL season. The Los Angeles stadium was originally slated to open in 2019 and will be home to both the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. However, the NFL, Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke and his ownership group delayed the stadium’s open date due to the site flooding earlier this year. It appears as if the Oakland Raiders could find themselves in the same spot with a flood-control channel underneath the stadium site that needs to be relocated.

The channel is located across Interstate 15 near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and needs to be moved approximately 150 feet to the west of it’s current location. The relocation process will need to approved by the Army Corps of Engineers who will grant the stadium’s builders a section 408 permit. The entire relocation project will exceed $1 million in costs, however, no taxpayer dollars will be used to fund it.

The original construction date for the future home of the Las Vegas Raiders is still set for November 29th with only a small possibility of delay. The flood control district board have already approved a $120,000 cost to expedite the review process involving the Army Corps of Engineers. Construction is anticipated to conclude by June 2020. The Las Vegas NFL Stadium is expected to host the Super Bowl in either 2022 or 2023.
