Old Yankee Stadium was one of the most storied stadiums in all of professional sports. Personally, I find it disappointing that the Yankees organization didn't preserve the ballpark the way the Boston Red Sox have done with Fenway Park and the Chicago Cubs have done with Wrigley Field. The venue was home to the Yankees from 1923 to 1973 and 1976 to 2008. During the 1974 and 1975 seasons, the stadium was temporarily closed so that new renovations could be completed. During that time period, the Yankees amassed 26 of their 27 World Series titles, the most in Major League Baseball. Yankee Stadium was also home to the New York Giants (football team) from 1956 to 1974.
Before old Yankee Stadium was constructed in 1923, the team shared the Polo Grounds with the New York Baseball Giants, whom eventually relocated to San Francisco to become the San Francisco Giants. New York Yankees owners Cap Huston and Jacob Ruppert wanted to build a stadium that dwarfed Polo Grounds. The two found a lumberyard in the Bronx that they would eventually purchase from William Waldorf Astor. The stadium's capacity would fluctuate over the years, typically between 54,000 seats and 71,000 seats. The stadium's capacity when it closed in 2008 was just under 57,000 seats. The very first New York Yankees home game was played on April 18th, 1923 vs. the Boston Red Sox. The final New York Yankees home game was played on September 21st, 2008 vs. the Baltimore Orioles.
One of the most recognizable features of old Yankee Stadium was the white facade that decorates the top portions of the stadium. That design was also implemented into new Yankee Stadium. Monument Park, an area celebrating former Yankees greats and the rich history of the New York Yankees organization, was also added to the new stadium in 2009. The voice of Bob Sheppard, the team's public address announcer, was famously echoed throughout the ballpark from 1951 to 2007. The iconic Yankee Stadium outfield bleachers, home of the "Bleacher Creatures", was the most famous seating area of the ballpark. Unlike old Yankee Stadium, new Yankee Stadium's bleachers are attached to the ballpark and bleacher ticket holders have access to all of the ballpark. Old Yankee Stadium was demolished in 2010 after two years of slow demolition and relocation. The former site is now known as Heritage Field and is regularly utilized by area grade school and high school teams.
It would become very tough to give a thorough and detailed description of the ballpark and it's extremely long history. With that said, we wanted to give New York sports fans the opportunity to relive some old memories of old Yankee Stadium through photos and video media. Enjoy!
