It's no secret that the Buffalo Bills play in the most outdated stadium in the National Football League. Some Buffalo Bills fans wouldn’t have it any other way. However, Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula would be leaving a lot of corporate revenue on the table by not building a new stadium for the team. Pegula recently stated that a new Buffalo Bills stadium would be a “scaled-down” version of the newer stadiums being built throughout the National Football League.
The Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, and Oakland Raiders (soon to be Las Vegas Raiders) already have construction plans in place for their new home stadiums. U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, is the newest stadium in the National Football League. Pegula Sports and Entertainment (PSE) have hired CAA Icon that will determine whether the Buffalo Bills would be better off building a new stadium or renovating and updating New Era Field, the team’s current home. A survey released by CAA Icon drew more than 30,000 respondents. The results of CAA Icon’s market study will be released during the second half of 2019. Pegula Sports and Entertainment are also the owners of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, who were also included in the market study. The Buffalo Sabres play their home games at the KeyBank Center, which is also considered an out of date venue and below NHL standards.
Terry Pegula would not comment on whether he would contribute his own finances toward the construction of the new Buffalo Bills stadium. A Buffalo politician recently admitted that the city was too broke to contribute money towards the construction of a new stadium for the Bills. In the meantime, Buffalo Bills fans are left wondering what the term “scaled-down version” could mean. It could mean a stadium with all of the bells and whistles but with a much smaller capacity compared to other NFL stadiums. Buffalo, New York, after all, is one of the smallest markets in the National Football League. The Buffalo Bills’ lease with New Era Field expires in 2023; the team’s home since 1973. New Era Field was formerly known as Ralph Wilson Stadium before Buffalo-based New Era Cap Company purchased the naming rights to the stadium.
