To give you an idea what the view of the ice is like from section 312, here is a Youtube video shot from there during an intermission at a Blackhawks game at the United Center.

I sat in row 7 on October 25th, 2011 for the Anaheim Ducks game. The game was one of the more eventful Blackhawks games I've been to, they won in a shootout!

I had fun at the game, the sight lines were just ok. If I were you, I would probably avoid this section only because there are so many other great sections on the 300 level, especially sections 316-320. Tickets can be had on most nights for $30-$40 so it's not like you're losing out on a ton of money by shelling out a little extra for center ice seats vs. the Red Wings.

As far as transportation: forget the $20-30 parking in the Malcolm X and surrounding lots, the CTA bus dropped us off right at the North side of the arena, although getting back to downtown is tricky since we had to walk south to the train station by the overpass/hospital. You will want to exit the south gate to do that.
