I love coming to new ballparks that I haven't been to before just to see how other teams "do things". The Texas Rangers do it up nicely. I'm from New York originally too and have high standards.
I bought our tickets via Stubhub for a Rangers - Toronto Blue Jays game. Section 317, row 19, seats 5 and 6. We didn't quiet like those seats and instead opted to move down about 8 or 9 rows after the 2nd inning. Much better. I didn't get the impression that everyone kind of sits where they want, this is a big stadium that sees a lot of fans on a nightly basis. The lower level is jam packed with fans in every seat too and the ushers seemed pretty thorough about checking tickets.
These seats are cramped and had a decent view down the third base side. As long as your seats will be near the infield , you should be happy.

A couple of things you may want to check out when visiting Rangers Ballpark include the

*Rangers Hall of Fame (behind home run porch and has it's own entrance on the outside of the stadium).
*Nolan Ryan statue - center field area.
*Shannon Stone statue (new, firefighter that fell to his death in the outfield in 2011).
*Vandergriff Plaza - Full service concessions. Video board behind center field so you can watch the game.
*Tour Cowboys Stadium down the road.
*Six Flags Theme Park next door.

To give you an idea what the view of the field is like from section 317, here is a Youtube video shot from there during a Rangers game at Rangers Ballpark.
