Fenway Sports Group, the ownership group of the Boston Red Sox, have announced that they are planning to build a theater behind Fenway Park. The group’s primary goal is to make Fenway Park, Yawkey Way, and the surrounding Fenway neighborhood a destination for tourists year around. The theater is expected to have a capacity of 5,000 and would be located on the corner of Ipswich and Lansdowne.

Fenway Sports Group will partner with Live Nation to open the theater, an event management company and subsidiary of Ticketmaster. Fenway Music Company, who also oversee the House of Blues music venue on Lansdowne Street, will oversee the day to day operations of the venue. The design of the theater and a timeline for it’s construction have not been revealed. Fenway Sports Group does have a concept in mind and it consists of a three-story building with a roof-deck overlooking the neighborhoods surrounding Fenway Park. The area outside of Fenway Park has seen plenty of development in the last five years with addition of upscale apartments and condos.

The Boston Red Sox aren’t the only sports team with this idea in mind. The Jacksonville Jaguars have built an amphitheater outside of TIAA Bank Stadium called “Daily’s Place”. There was also a Silverspot Cinema added to the Battery Atlanta development outside of SunTrust Park, the home of the Atlanta Braves. In the future, it will be interesting to see how many professional sports teams tear down perfectly good stadiums in the pursuit of the mixed-use developments that so many other teams are building. Will the local taxpayer end up footing the bill?
