In the wake of a young girl getting hit by a 105 MPH line drive by Todd Frazier of the New York Yankees, the Chicago Cubs will be adding 30 additional feet of protective netting to Wrigley Field. In addition to moving the dugouts a little further down during previously planned renovations of Wrigley Field, the Cubs will extend the netting to the beginning of each dugout instead of the ends which are located near home plate.
For many years, several Major League Baseball organizations and various players have lobbied for more netting. However, season ticket holders were worried about more netting obstructing their view of the field. Major League Baseball offered new recommendations for netting to ensure fan safety in 2015. Teams have sporadically adopted those safety measures. Other Major League teams that will also add more netting to ensure fan safety include the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds.
One thing is for sure; Wrigley Field is beginning to look vastly different than the friendly confines of the old days. The Cubs are making an effort to keep up with the times, however. Renovating and modernizing Wrigley Field is much better than opting for a brand new ballpark.
