Aerial photo of Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California.

Candlestick Park was the longtime home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants. The stadium was built in the beautiful Bayview Heights neighborhood of San Francisco on Candlestick Point. The location often gave the stadium strong wind gusts which sometimes halted the flow of the game. The Giants played there from 1960-2000 while the 49ers called it home from 1971-2013. A staggering 8 NFC Championship games were played at Candlestick Park, the very first was "The Catch", a game winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana to Dwight Clark.

The stadium hosted many other important events such as the Beatles final concert together on August 29th, 1969. Candlestick was awarded Super Bowl XXXIII by the NFL but failed to make the renovations necessary for the game to be played there. The Loma Prieta earthquake struck Candlestick Park on October 17th, 1989 during Game 3 of the World Series causing structural damage to the stadium.

The stadium was given it's name by a local contest that allowed fans to decide on the stadium's name. Candlestick Park's name was changed many times after being originally founded as Harney Stadium (1956-1959) before becoming Candlestick Park in 1960-1995 and 2008-2013. It was also once known as 3Com Park at Candlestick Point (1995-2002), San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point (2002-2004) and Monster Park (2004-2008). As a fan, I can tell you that nothing pisses fans off more than corporate naming rights and name changes. The final 49ers home game was played on December 23rd, 2013 vs. the Atlanta Falcons. The final Giants home game was played on September 30th, 1999 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers

We wanted to give San Francisco sports fans a brief look at some old memories of the stadium on the point. It hasn't been that long since the 49ers played there but it seems like ages since both teams last called Candlestick Park home. Enjoy!
